The Journey of Romana: Overcoming obstacles for a better life

Romana is a 72-year old woman with osteoporosis which makes her bones weak and fragile.  This medical condition has caused her to fall several times in her life, injuring her hands, hips, spine, shoulder blades and legs.

With the intention of receiving proper treatment, she went to a chiropractor who unfortunately caused additional problems. Because of these experiences, Romana finds herself consumed by thoughts of despair and hopelessness of her life ever improving.

She is originally from Durango.  When her mother died, she was left to care for her father.  For him, education was not a priority, so she was not given the opportunity for schooling.  However, young Romana, had a resilient spirit and a desire to learn and grow; consequently, she learned to read and write on her own. Ramona is very proud for being able to accomplish this goal despite the obstacles and lack of support from her father.

Ramona lived in devastating circumstances which made her medical condition more difficult. Thanks to the love and support of the Oblate Associates from our mission, Romana’s house was built and relocated, giving her the opportunity of having a more stable home. Most of the Oblate Associates from our mission are also struggling financially; nevertheless, their love for others led all of them to contribute financially to buy the building supplies for the house. They then spent the day working in the hot sun to build a more dignified house for Ramona.

Romana used to sell food.  Sadly, she recently had a fall that dislocated her spine, making it impossible for her to continue.  Since then, she has been able to survive through the help of the Oblate Programs.

The Oblate Associates group visit Ramona to bring her food, toiletries, and other supplies. Most importantly, they visit her to spend some quality time with her. The Social Ministry has given her a wheelchair and other supplies. They also prepare meals for her, since it is very difficult for her to cook. Our young medical professionals also visit Ramona every week to check her health and monitor her condition.

At this moment she does not have a fixed income because her medical condition makes it impossible for her to work.  Her illness, financial situation, and lack of control has caused her much grief. Please pray for Ramona!
