Love, Faith, and Community:  Story of Yarizbet Gutierrez

When thinking about exceptional couples, Yarizbet Gutierrez and Edgar, his husband, come to mind.  They have been married for eight years. Edgar, 30 years old, and Yarizbet, 26 years old, are great role models for their community.

They met in the State of Mexico, Yarizbet’s place of origin.  They describe it as “love at first sight” –  since the moment they met, they have not stopped showing interest in each other. Edgar returned to Tijuana and soon after she came to live with him. When they realized that their love was selfless, unconditional and altruistic – an agape love – they decided to get married.

Like any relationship, their marriage has had ups and downs.  Her family has never fully agreed with their union; thinking that they were too young to get married.  They have endured many obstacles throughout their relationship, however, both have moved forward, taking care of each other and having God as a priority. They support each other with their work – living a dignified life.

Two months ago, Yarizbet started having chest pains, severe cramps and general malaise. She went to the family doctor who sent her for tests to rule out serious health problems.  Sadly, she was found to have stage four renal failure. The doctors still can’t explain how this happened to her, considering she had no previous signs of this disease – it just appeared without warning.  She urgently needs a kidney transplant – the estimated cost of which is $45,000.  She also needs a compatible donor.

This young couple has found a lot of support and hope at our Oblate parish. Our doctors visit and guide them during this very difficult health process.  Parish members are helping them to raise funds with food sales and raffles. The family is receiving spiritual support through the Search retreat, weekly masses, and meetings. This is a clear example of a community coming together to help those in need. St. Eugene has been the inspiration for this community.

Please join our community by praying for Yarizbet’s health.
