Misinformation on health issues is one of the main problems in our community. There are people who do not know that they have hypertension, diabetes or any of these diseases that are silently killing their lives.
The Health Program has worked against the growing need for medical attention, especially to the poorest and neediest.
For this reason, the Health Days, a biannual event that has multiple professionals from different sectors, such as dentists, general practitioners, nurses and specialists in various branches, all with the purpose of providing medical support to the community.
On this occasion, the doctors of our community received more than 100 people with different medical needs, who due to their economic situation, are not able to afford it.
One lady said that she could not hear out of her left ear, explaining that she had tried to clean herself with a cotton swap. She was treated with the correct medical equipment, and it was possible to discover that she had left a piece of swab inside her ear canal.
Another of the most shocking cases was that of a lady who was unknowingly on the verge of a heart attack due to hypertension. These health fairs are a great opportunity for people to receive the medical care that they need but cannot afford. In addition, at these health fairs people from the community learn about healthy living habits to prevent health problems in the future.
Our Oblate medical team helps about 300 people a month, mostly through home visits; however, there are many other people in the community who have serious health problems that have not been detected. Many times, these people suffer in silence.
These health fairs allow our medical team to reach and help many people in one day; in addition, they help our team discover health issues that have not been detected or corrected. Our current goal is to take these Health Fairs to every corner of our mission, making sure that all the people know about the medical support offered in our Oblate Pastoral Center, and that they not only cure their illnesses, but that they know Christ through the work of the doctors and professionals.
